Can Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Why yes, Christians can celebrate Halloween! My mother was a devout Christian and we celebrated Halloween every year and had fun with it!

The debate lives on around the question ‘Can Christians Celebrate Halloween.’ Some believers won’t allow their kids to go out trick-or-treating, go to Halloween parties, or do anything that observes the Halloween tradition.

However, there really are no specific mentions of the word “Halloween” in the Bible. The closest reference is in I John 2:15-17, which is often paraphrased as “Be in the world but not of the world.”

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Growing Up as Christians and Halloween Observers

My mother was a devout Christian and raised us in a very fundamental Baptist church. The pastor and his family were adamant that Halloween was a pagan holiday, something that devil worshipers observed but that Christians should not.

They didn’t even acknowledge Halloween so their kids were always at home watching other kids in the neighborhood dress up and go trick-or-treating. I always felt bad for them when I was a kid.

My mother, however, had a different opinion on that holiday. So while our church was totally against celebrating Halloween, my mother always made we had our costumes and bags or plastic pumpkins ready to go out and get our candy. She and my father stocked up on the sweet goodies to hand out to the kids when they came knocking.

She believed we were in the world but since we weren’t pagans or devil worshipers and didn’t practice any “black magic,” or call upon demons in our house, there was nothing wrong with letting her kids have some fun.

I remember one year at AWANA, not at our regular church but a neighboring one, we had a Halloween party at the church. One of the games was everyone was blindfolded while passing around creepy food items; grapes for eyes and cold, cooked spaghetti as brains. It was a lot of fun!

Christians and Halloween Costumes

I raised my kids the same way. As a Christian, I made sure my kids’ Halloween costumes were modest and fun. Princess costumes for my daughter when she was little; the latest Ninja Turtle costume for my son.

Parents can be really creative and imaginative with Halloween costumes, especially if they’re crafty. My sister-in-law turned her son into a tree one Halloween. I’ve seen some pretty crazy and amazing costumes over the years that have nothing to do with demons and the satanic.

Some middle school kids simply do face painting with mismatched clothing as a costume. Inexpensive, simple and fun so they don’t need to wear a plastic mask.

Over the years, the theme of “witchcraft” died down and instead Halloween and trick-or-treating is a night of fun and seeing if we can outdo last year’s costumes. Some elementary schools still celebrate the holiday with a Halloween parade so kids can show off their costumes.

Some families even dress up their pets in Halloween costumes and take them trick-or-treating for some added laughter!

Adults and Halloween Parties

Kids aren’t the only ones who love having fun. Christians adults can have some good, clean Halloween fun too. Festive goodies that look creepy but taste awesome; costumes that scare or so funny you can’t stop laughing.

Many people love dressing up one night out of the year. It’s like it gives them license to act silly and play some crazy games with their friends.

My husband and I went to a Halloween-themed wedding a couple years ago. I went as a judge, complete with the white wig and a genuine judge’s black robe. We got my husband a prisoner costume and fake handcuffs. It was a blast!

Not all Halloween costumes have to be scary! It’s just a night to dress up as hilariously as you want!

How Can Christians Celebrate Halloween at Church?

Can Christian churches celebrate Halloween? Oh, yes! Ours does! We do a “Trunk-or-Treat” celebration at both of our church locations for the neighborhood kids. The treats are all in decorated vehicle trunks for kids to walk by and get their bags full of goodies.

Trunk-or-Treat events keep kids off the roads and safe on Halloween night. They’re usually events put on by communities, churches, and other organizations. For churches, it’s a perfect outreach program to bring others to the Lord. We get a great turnout every year, too!

As our pastor says, we’ll do anything short of sin to bring people to Christ. And since Christians love having fun, we love doing fun things with our outreach programs.

Until the Lord returns and takes us home, we do have to live in this world. I don’t think Jesus wants us to hide, especially when Halloween has nothing to do with satanic rituals anymore, but just one night out of the year to dress up and have fun.
